Haiku is a Japanese style of poetry that consists of 17 syllables. While some forms of poetry are far more free flowing, this particular style traditionally was written vertically. Over time, the adopted 3 horizontal lines became the standard.
The beauty of haiku is multifaceted. The subject itself, the depth of that subject and the simplicity with which it's written about. But there is more to it than that. The well written haiku has deliberate gaps. What's left out is equally as interesting as what gets put in.
The 3 line standard has a rule of 5/7/5. The first line consists of 5 syllables, the second 7, and the third 5. With these guidelines, each word and syllable must have purpose. We believe that writing on purpose will lead to living on purpose.
